This was the very first patient monitoring session on the iTrend project in October 2019. I’m looking a bit haggard as I had to get up at 04.30 in order to get into Derby Royal Hospital and set up ready for the patient starting dialysis at 07.00. We were very much in the ‘proof of principle’ here, proving that non-invasive, continuous blood pressure measurement was possible over a 4-hour treatment session without comprimising patient experience and comfort. We needed the device to be robust to patient movement and also compromised cardiovascular health which both reduce the effectiveness of oscillatory finger cuff measurements. Quite soon into the study we were able to discard the need for an external calibration device, relying instead, only on standard regular brachial cuff measurements.

The rig is hardly recognisable alongside the current compact DAQ edge device.
